School Board meeting summary

The November meeting of the Bancroft-Rosalie School Board was held Monday, November 11, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. Dr. Cerny presented: the October transportation report; District tax history; and State School Board Conference.

In old business the board took no action on the Nebraska Whole Child Project membership agreement. There was discussion on the possibility of establishing bus pick-up points for in neighboring communities when there are enough option enrollment students from that community to justify it starting in the 2014-15 school year. The board also discussed the plan for developing the recently purchased lots south of the school for parking and student drop-off and pick-up.

In new business the board reviewed the district multicultural program and the school technology plan. Principal Sjuts presented a preliminary teacher evaluation report. Approval was given to update the school surveillance equipment and add software for keyless entry to the Main entrance door.

The board approved the rental of a skid loader for snow removal from Mel’s Small Engine and voted to continue the current system of signing checks with the addition of following the auditor’s suggestion to also stamp the board president’s name to each check to comply with state statute. The school board will be provided a list of checks that were stamped at the monthly board meetings. The board designated two additional days of school for students in the CNA class to meet the minimum instructional hours required for state certification. Approval was given for the inter-local agreement with ESU #2 for the Data Dashboard pilot school project.

Discussion was held regarding possible talks with Lyons-Decatur School to explore ways the districts can work together. Pat Browning, Scott Hansen and Mike Nottlemann were appointed to a committee to represent the board in any meetings with Lyons-Decatur.

The board went into executive session to discuss teacher negotiations.

Smart Snacks in Schools Standards

The USDA recently published the “Smart Snacks in School” standards for all foods sold in school outside the school meals programs. These practical, science-based standards are for foods sold in vending machines and a la carte lines – standards that make the healthy choice the easy choice for students.
The new standards become effective in the 2014-15 school year.

It is important to note that USDA has no role in regulating foods brought from home. The standards do not apply to any foods brought to school in bagged lunches, or for birthday parties and special events, including after-school bake sales and fundraisers.
The standards do not apply to snacks for special class rewards and celebrations.

The new standards will not impact Bancroft-Rosalie Schools very much since we do not sell sodas or any foods from our vending machines.

Highlights of the Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards include:

-- More of the foods we should encourage.
-- Less of the foods we should avoid.
-- Targeted beverage standards allowing variation by age group.
-- Flexibility for important traditions.
-- Ample time for implementation.
What do the new “Smart Snacks in School” nutrition standards do?
The new standards will allow schools to offer healthier snack foods for our children, while
limiting junk food served to students. Students will still be able to buy snacks that meet common-sense standards for fat, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium, while promoting products
that have whole grains, low fat dairy, fruits, vegetables or protein foods as their main ingredients.

Fill out and return your Bancroft Income Survey

Bancroft Village residents will soon be receiving an Income Survey in the mail. The survey is necessary to determine if Bancroft is eligible to receive federal funds for community projects. The focus project right now is improving housing in Bancroft.

The requirement is that 100% of households in Bancroft have to complete and return the survey. That is why it is important that all residents get this done. The survey information is confidential- it is the overall summary of the Bancroft community that the surveyors are interested in.

Income surveys are used to determine the number of low income households in a community. The more low income households- the more federal and state programs Bancroft will be eligible to participate in. So we especially need those families marking "Below" to return their surveys.

An income survey was done in Bancroft three years ago and there was not enough returned. This time help the Village meet the goal of 100% returned.

Junior and Seniors attend Save A Life Tour

The Save A Life Tour was brought to the Nielsen Center in West Point by Cuming County Juvenile Diversion. Bancroft-Rosalie juniors and seniors had the opportunity to experience from a sober perspective the effects of alcohol on motor skills and reaction time. A multi-million dollar DUI simulator helped students get a realistic look at the impaired judgment and delayed reaction time that alcohol causes. The simulator reacts to each student's size and weight differently and maneuvers like a drunk driver over 80 miles of roadways, including changing weather conditions.

The assembly program included graphic, realistic videos of actual DUI accidents and emergency room scenes. A B-R senior commented that the program "made her very sad". Another senior said after viewing the program she will "never drink and drive."
