NeSA Results
The Nebraska Department of Education released the NeSA results to the public yesterday. I was very disappointed with our student performance because it doesn't correlate to other assessments that the students have taken, particularly in mathematics. It is apparent that several of our students are not taking these tests seriously. Otherwise how can you explain a student scoring at "exceeds the standard" in reading last year and scoring "not met" the standard in reading this year? Poor test results could eventually place schools on the PLAS list (persistently low achieving schools) which is not where we want to be.
These results are published on the internet, and this year's results are embarrassing.
It has been suggested that counting NeSA as a test grade would improve the effort, but I am opposed to that because grades should reflect the learning that takes place in that classrooom. But we may have no other alternative.
Hopefully students and staff will become more aware of the importance of performing well on state assessments and we will get a better effort this year.

B-R athletes IMPACT tested
Last night Channel 7 did a feature of ImPACT testing of athletes in Omaha. B-R is also using ImPACT. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. All B-R high school athletes out for football and basketball have been given the test and baseline data is managed through St. Francis Hospital in West Point. New students are being baseline tested this week.
Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing. This type of concussion assessment can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete's post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion.
ImPACT can be administered by anyone trained to administer baseline testing. ImPACT takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The program measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including:
* Attention span
* Working memory
* Sustained and selective attention time
* Response variability
* Non-verbal problem solving
* Reaction time

Activity Bus Drivers needed
Bancroft-Rosalie School needs activity bus drivers. We have only three licensed bus drivers.
The requirement is to be at least 18, have a CDL, pass a Level 1 training (12 hours of classroom), pass a physical, spend two hours driving with a licensed driver, and pass a driving test with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Pay is $10.90 per hour, and you are paid from the time you clock in until the time you clock out (that means paid for watching games and speech meets).
Two hours guaranteed if you drive a morning or after-school bus route.
The school district pays for all expenses involved in getting licensed. If interested, contact Mike Sjuts at 402-648-3336.
Great retirement job.

Bancroft income surveys
The second attempt at an income survey of the residents of Bancroft was sent out last week. The survey is to measure the number of households in Bancroft that are below the median income level of Nebraskans. The goal is to have 100% of the surveys returned to the Cuming County Economic Development office in West Point. There will be three cash prizes (50,25,25) and anyone returning the survey will be entered into the drawing, which will be held in the Bancroft Park picnic shelter on Wednesday, September 7 at 10:00 am.

Panthers rated #4?
With only two returning starters, the Omaha World Herald preseason rating of B-R football at #4 is very optimistic. The team is capable of being rated, but with so many inexperienced players in the starting line-up the team needs to prove themselves first.

Gym floor takes on new look
The Bancroft-Rosalie new gym has been sanded and repainted. The basketball court lines are blue instead of black and the volleyball lines are black instead of silver. Removing the old wax and sanding down to the wood resulted in a lighter, brighter appearance.
Workers taking off the old paint.
The new floor. The gym lights were down in this photo to save electricity. It will look much lighter when the full gym lights are on.

Next Betterment meeting Wed. Sept. 7 10:00 am
The next Bancroft Betterment meeting will be Wednesday September 7 at 10:00 a.m. in the Village Park. We will meet under the picnic shelter. Coffee and rolls will be available.
At the meeting there will be a drawing for three cash prizes for those that returned the income surveys to the Cuming County Economic Development office. The survey will be done again to take advantage of new income guidelines that could work in our favor, and due to the need to increase the return rate of the first survey.
An agenda will be posted as we get closer to the meeting date.

School board approves purchase of school display sign
A digital display sign will replace the existing school sign on the east edge of the school parking lot. The sign will be full color and large enough to run three lines of letters. The sign will be purchased using money from the "premium holiday" that Blue Cross Blue Shield is implementing in December. The holiday means that Bancroft-Rosalie School will not have to pay health insurance premiums in December, a savings of over $25,000. Use of the holiday money must be agreed to by both the school board and the Bancroft-Rosalie Education Association (the local teachers union). If the teachers agree to this proposal, the sign will be in place before Thanksgiving.
The sign will be run by computer. Eventually community events in Bancroft and Rosalie could be displayed on the sign.
Here is a computer projection of how the sign will appear. The actual display will be larger- displaying three lines rather than the two lines shown.

Elementary Football Program
The communities of Bancroft and Rosalie are organizing a tackle football program for elementary students this Fall. A goal of $7500 was set for start-up costs to fund the program.
Last Friday they held a football camp to introduce the players to tackle football. Twenty-eight players attended the camp from Bancroft, Rosalie, Lyons, Macy and Lincoln.
Coaches for the camp were all current or former high school football coaches: Adam James, Brad Vogt, Barry Bonneau and Kyle Elsasser.

Nebraska Commissioner of Education's message to administrator's
Nebraska Education Commissioner Roger Breed delivered a powerpoint presentation to Nebraska school administrator's entitled "PATHWAYS TO GRADUATION: Systems for Student Success. Here are the major points in the presentation:
The “hedgehog concept” in Nebraska:
We accept high levels of learning for all students as the fundamental purpose of our schools and therefore we are willing to examine all practices in light of impact on learning.
Trends in Nebraska public education-
1. Fewer districts, more smaller districts.
2. More minority, greater levels of poverty
3. Greater needs, fewer supports
4. Graduation projections
Student attendance 2009-10
21,964 students missed more than 20 days (8%)
1,513 Grades 1 & 2 students missed more than 20 days
Correlation between attendance and scores on State reading test
Grade 11- less than 20 days–102 average score
Grade 11- more than 20 days–72 average score
All students high school graduates, college and career ready.
Where we need to go:
Improve student achievement
Narrow achievement gaps
Increase graduation and college enrollment rates
Nebraska jobs projection
66% of all jobs will require some postsecondary training beyond high school in the next decade
All children can learn
All means ALL

Betterment meeting notes
The Bancroft Betterment met last night at 5:15 pm in the B-R school library. Lisa Hurley from Northeast Economic Development talked about the programs that they have available. She shared some ideas about what other communities were doing to develop housing, including TIF financing. The community housing survey was also discussed.
The consensus was to move forward with the planning grant. The income surveys will be redone for all residents to take advantage of 2011 income guidelines. A letter explaining that will accompany the survey along with the chance for everyone who returns a survey to enter a drawing for three cash prizes. The surveys will be run through Cuming County Economic Development office.
Once the attitude surveys are tabulated, a town hall meeting will be held to allow community residents an opportunity for input.
The Betterment group hopes for the support of the community as we attempt to improve the housing in Bancroft.

School addition preliminary footprint
Heritage Homes has designed a preliminary drawing for a proposed two classroom addition to the north end of the Bancroft-Rosalie School building. The two classrooms would be used for music and social studies. An updated drawing is being worked on to widen the music room by 10 feet to make it comparable in size to the current music room, which will be converted into two classrooms for special education and to split a lower elementary grade into two classes.
Here is the design.
