Carol was able to complete a few laps around the hospital yesterday and is enjoying a clear liquid breakfast this morning (strawberry jello and Italian ice). First food since last Sunday (also jello). She has been feeling pretty good. No word yet on when she will be released. I am hoping for tomorrow.

Nebraska Eight Man All-Star
West beats the East. Matt Stansberry played cornerback for the East and had 7 tackles and 2 pass break-ups. The following news article was published in the Lincoln Journal.
The 34th annual Nebraska Sertoma Eight-Man All-Star football game was played on an 11-man, 100-yard field. And the way the defenses performed Saturday at Adams Central High School, it looked like they had three extra players pursuing every play.
Mullen all-stater Zach Call's 2-yard touchdown run with 7:17 left in the first quarter was the only score of the game in the West's 7-0 victory against the East before an estimated 2,000 sun-drenched spectators.
Eight-man football is normally a high-scoring game, so after the game, both head coaches predictably said they'd never seen anything like it. The dominant defense, physical play and 16 punts by both teams (eight for each) would've definitely earned the Pelini brothers' seal of approval.
"This was hard-nosed football with tremendous hitting on both ends,'' said West coach Craig Schnitzler of Kenesaw, whose team finished with 110 total yards. "It became a war out there.''
In the second half, the East defense held the West to just one first down and minus 7 yards rushing (the West lost 9 yards kneeling to kill the clock on the final two plays of the game) and 10 yards passing.
"We thought our defense was good enough to win the game,'' East coach Jim Pfeiffer of Friend said after his squad picked up 150 yards. "We thought we could move the ball with the athletic kids we had, but they (the West) had great speed defensively and they shut down almost everything we tried.''
Fittingly, it was a defensive play that set up the lone score, as Pleasanton linebacker Garrett Reese recovered an East fumble at the East 14-yard line. Call scored three plays later.
The West had a chance to add to its lead later in the first quarter, getting to the East 1. The East defense threw Axtell's Heath Anderbery for a 1-yard loss on third down. On fourth down, the East's Cody Stalp broke through and tackled Anderbery for a 7-yard loss on a pitch play to the left.
Stalp, from West Point Central Catholic, was the East defensive MVP.
Giltner's Derreck Eastman was chosen the East offensive MVP after gaining a game-high 63 yards on 15 carries. Overton quarterback Jacob Jensen was the West offensive MVP and Reese was the defensive MVP.

Thank you Great Plains for your quick response.
Good news for Nebraska Football Fans.
Here is the response from Great Plains regarding the Big Ten Network in Bancroft.
"Bancroft will not be affected by the blackout. In fact, no Great Plains Communications community will be affected by the blackout. Unfortunately, the Omaha World Herald did not consult with us to get the full list of Great Plains Communications’ communities with the Big 10 Network and several towns were left out of the article."

Locker rooms get new look
The Bancroft-Rosalie School locker rooms and training room have new floor tile this summer. Previously the floors were painted concrete. For years the school had difficulty getting the paint to stick to the floor when the floor became wet. The new tile is more attractive than the gray paint and the tile has a texture which should provide traction if the floor becomes wet after showering.

Nebraska football games on Bancroft cable?
Today's Omaha World Herald listed the cable companies and towns that would be able to view the three Nebraska Football games televised by the Big Ten Network. Great Plains Cable was listed as an approved carrier, but Bancroft was not listed with twenty other Great Plains communities as receiving the games next Fall.
Since Bancroft cable receives the Big Ten Network right now, was our absence on the list an oversight? Or do I need to start making plans to receive the games through a different carrier?

Jess Tietz contacted by UNL
Earlier this week Jessica Tietz was on the tractor cutting hay when she received a call on her cell phone. The man on the other end was University of Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne. Coach Osborne and Womens B-Ball Coach Connie Yori saw Jess play at a basketball tournament in Omaha last weekend and he wanted to let her know that the University was interested in having her come and visit campus.
Few B-R athletes get contacted by UNL, and Dr. Osborne probably doesn't have many phone conversations where the female athlete informs him that she is helping bale hay.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support training in June
Bancroft-Rosalie is sending a team for Level One training in Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). The team includes Mr. Sjuts (administrator), Mrs. Ras (counselor), Mrs. Wegner (special Education), Mrs. Vogt (teacher), Robin Petersen (preschool), Shonna Briggs (parent) and Marchelle Polenske (parent).
Schools that implement PBIS throughout the school establish a common purpose and approach to discipline among all staff members, a clear set of positive expectations and behaviors, procedures for teaching expected behaviors, procedures for systematic supervision of students, procedures for encouraging expected behaviors and discouraging inappropriate behaviors, and procedures for collecting behavior data and using it to guide decision-making.
One change students will notice are the incentives for exhibiting good behavior. It is time to start recognizing and rewarding those students that act appropriately rather than giving the attention to those that misbehave.
Some goals of the program are to increase attendance, decrease office referrals, and improve the learning climate of the school system. This includes behavior in the hallways, on the bus, and at lunch and recess.

Betterment meeting Tuesday 10:30 am
Tuesday June 7 the Bancroft Betterment meeting will be at 10:30 am at the Country Pub.
I have talked with State Senator Lydia Brasch's office and hope that the senator will be able to speak to the group about the recent legislative session.
Coffee and muffins are courtesy of Dr. Cerny. Bring a friend. It would be nice to have a good crowd.

B-R highlighted in Education Quest publication
The following article will be published in the next Education Quest bulletin
Exploring health careers Bancroft Rosalie has a comprehensive program dedicated to increasing student awareness on health careers. The school superintendent works closely with Northeast Community College (NCC) to provide students with a C.N.A. or Medication Aid certification. They hope to add EMT training in the future. Community members including health department employees and high school faculty work together to teach the health career courses.
Students work with in tandem with their parents during February registration to ensure that the students are enrolled in appropriate courses. Classes are offered during the high school day, generally, during the last period.
Students also have the opportunity for job shadowing experiences at an area hospital. This valuable experience provides critical insight into future careers expectations.
Campus visits to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Creighton University are offered to students interested in the health careers field. Students participate in tours of the campus, and even get a look at the cadaver lab. All of these activities help facilitate the students’ understanding of health careers.
The Need
Getting students excited about a career is the first step but building a career for a student is a difficult task. Many students lack the necessary funds for certification courses.
Program Highlights and Tips:
• Build partnerships with local college to build support systems for students. Have the administration work closely with college professionals to provide quality programming and certification.
• Search the community and school faculty to find qualified staff for the courses. Check to see if the school nurse is able to teach classes to students. Consider contacting the local hospital to find potential teacher candidates.
• Encourage attendance by involving parents in the process. Identify students early via health career assessments and then assist them in the registration process. Require parental sign-off on student registration.
• Celebrate student success by recognizing the new certification awards. Recognize the students during a time when both peers and families are in attendance.
