Summer School July 21- August 7

Summer school recommendation letters were mailed yesterday to students in grades pre-8.

We would like parents to let us know by this Friday if you plan to send your student to summer school so that we can plan accordingly.

During summer school, students will review and practice skills in math and/or reading in order to prepare them for the beginning of the new school year. Each student will follow an individual plan that will be developed by their teachers focusing on the needs of the student. In some cases K-6 we are recommending entire reading groups attend so that the group can catch up and join another reading group.

Students that scored below the school benchmark on the Nebraska State Assessments are automatically recommended for summer school. This is the reason for students in grades 7-8 were sent letters.

Classes will meet for twelve days, Monday through Thursday beginning July 21. The following are summer school dates and times:

July 21-22-23-24                        8:15-   11:45 am
July 28-29-30-31                        8:15-   11:45 am
August 4-5-6-7                           8:15-   11:45 am

Students can ride the bus/van that will leave Rosalie at 8:00 am and will leave Bancroft at 11:50 am returning to Rosalie at 12:00 noon.

Jerrica Tietz wins Congressional Art Competition for second time

Jerrica Tietz will be traveling to Washington DC again this summer to be recognized at an awards ceremony for winning the Congressional Art Competition for congressional District One. She was notified by Congressman Jeff Fortenberry's office that her drawing won.

Brianna Wegner was named Honorary Distinction for her drawing.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Study finds that what students experience at college is more important to their future well-being than which college they attend

Information on this study can be found at http://www.gallup.com/poll/168848/life-college-matters-life-college.aspx

When it comes to being engaged at work and experiencing high well-being after graduation, a new Gallup-Purdue University study of college graduates shows that the type of institution they attended matters less than what they experienced there. Going to Harvard, Princeton or Yale may not be any better than attending Wayne State College as far as the well-being of the student is concerned.

These results are based on the inaugural Gallup-Purdue Index, a joint-research effort with Purdue University and Lumina Foundation to study the relationship between the college experience and college graduates' lives.

The study found that the type of schools these college graduates attended -- public or private, small or large, very selective or less selective -- hardly matters at all to their workplace engagement and current well-being. Just as many graduates of public colleges as graduates of not-for-profit private colleges are engaged at work -- meaning they are deeply involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their work. And just as many graduates of public as not-for-profit private institutions are thriving -- which Gallup defines as strong, consistent, and progressing -- in all areas of their well-being.

Instead, the study found that support and experiences in college had more of a relationship to long-term outcomes for these college graduates. For example, if graduates recalled having a professor who cared about them as a person, made them excited about learning, and encouraged them to pursue their dreams, their odds of being engaged at work more than doubled, as did their odds of thriving in all aspects of their well-being. And if graduates had an internship or job in college where they were able to apply what they were learning in the classroom, were actively involved in extracurricular activities and organizations, and worked on projects that took a semester or more to complete, their odds of being engaged at work doubled as well.

School Musical in 2014

Because of the number of talented musicians in the high school, Bancroft-Rosalie is proposing to the school board to add back the school play/musical.

Attached is the proposed schedule for a school musical next year.
Practices would start before the first day of school and performances would be the third weekend in September.
Mr. Bridges will direct and Mr. Sundleaf will assist.
Not all of the night practices can be guaranteed, but the morning practices will be minimal until school athletics contests start at the end of August.
The musical that has been selected is one hour in length, so practices can be shorter than a typical musical would require.
