I made it back from Indiana in time to watch the Pender legion defeat Sutton 7-4 in in the winners bracket final last night. The game was broadcast by West Point radio and videostreamed on the Internet. An exciting game; Pender scored 3 in the extra inning and held Sutton scoreless.
The Sutton head coach was ejected from the game by the home plate umpire. I don't know what was said, but from what I could observe the ejection was justified. More than any other sport, American Legion baseball emphasizes sportsmanship and good behavior. The coach has a one game suspension and must sit out the next game, but during postseason play there is an appeal process that a coach can use to overturn the one game suspension. I am interested to see if an appeal is filed, and if the Legion supports the decision of the umpire and their own rules on coach and player behavior.
Good luck Pender Legion in your game with Malcolm tonight at 8:00 pm.
Win or lose, Pender will play in the championship game tomorrow.
