Last spring, this years seniors took the NeSA state reading test and 79% of them scored as proficient (68% or above).
This week our junior class took the NeSA state reading test and the results are extremely disappointing. If 68% is the cut-off point again this year, only 10 of the 31 juniors will be proficient.
We will get the official state results in July. Once we receive more information, we will be able to make decisions to remedy this problem.
One remedy may be more intense vocabulary instruction in all high school subjects. An example would be requiring each instructor to teach new vocabulary at the beginning of each class period. Students would then take vocabulary tests at the end of each semester to measure proficiency. Administrators would visit each classroom every week to provide teachers feedback on vocabulary instruction.
