Students visit Penro Construction for job exploration

Penro Construction held a youth job exploration as part of their open house. Eight Bancroft-Rosalie students and 16 Pender students attended.
Ryan Kinning, Vice President of Penro Construction, held a short question and answer session and a safety discussion, then the students divided up into groups and went through 3 hands on learning stations that were set up.  The first station was to run an excavator and try to pick up a basketball off of a cone and dump the ball into a wastebasket.  The second station was running a front end loader with forks on it instead of a bucket.  The students picked up a pipe, drove around the Penro building, and set the pipe back down on a sawhorse.  The third station was to pour a small pad of concrete. The students received help from members of the Nebraska Concrete and Aggregate Association.
The students really enjoyed the afternoon and talked all at the way back to school.
Students attending were Ben Bassett, Couy French, Bradley Marr, Jaxon Johnson, Kobe Lyons, Weston Pagels, Parker Paulson, and Darwin Snyder. Everyone agreed that Dr. Cerny won the excavator contest, Right Guys?

CONVERSATION WITH CAVETT AND HULL AT WAYNE STATE COLLEGE ON FEB. 20th

Two Nebraskan broadcasting legends will appear together on one special evening as the Black and Gold Performing Arts Series at Wayne State College and John G. Neihardt Foundation present "A Conversation with Dick Cavett featuring Ron Hull" on Monday, February 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Ramsey Theatre at Wayne State College in Wayne.

Best-known as the host of “The Dick Cavett Show,” Cavett is a three-time Emmy award winner with a television career spanning five decades. He is also author of Cavett (1974), Eye on Cavett (1983) Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic Moments and Assorted Hijinks (2014) and has two PBS specials: Dick Cavett’s Watergate (2014) and Dick Cavett’s Vietnam (2015). A Nebraska native from Gibbon, Cavett will appear on stage with long-time friend Ron Hull. “Dick Cavett is truly a Nebraska son,” Hull said. “He has never forgotten his roots and he’s contributed his auspicious talent to our culture and myriad Nebraska events throughout his life.”

Hull’s television career also spans decades, beginning in 1955 as a producer-director at Nebraska Educational Television where he currently serves as Senior Advisor. Hull also served stints with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington D.C. and the U.S. Foreign Service in Vietnam. He is also author of Backstage: Stories of My Life in Public Television (2012), an autobiography that includes highlights of his lifelong career.

Not only do Hull and Cavett share Nebraskan roots and careers in television, they have Nebraska’s Poet Laureate in Perpetuity in common – both interviewed writer John G. Neihardt for television. Neihardt, a graduate of Wayne Normal School (now Wayne State College) in 1896 at the age of 16, had returned to Nebraska in the 1970’s after a successful career as a writer. During this time, he lived in Lincoln as well as conducted interviews with both Cavett and Hull. Neihardt’s popularity exploded after his 1972 appearance on “The Dick Cavett Show” introduced a new generation to the poet’s life and works. Hull’s interviews in Bancroft also preserved Neihardt’s legacy. "For me, the name 'Neihardt' and the name 'Nebraska' are of just about equal weight," Cavett said.

Hull and Cavett will also appear for a book signing following the program with DVD's and books available for purchase at the event. Ticket admission for the event is $10 for the general public and free to Wayne State College students. Event proceeds will directly support the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site, a branch museum of the Nebraska State Historical Society in Bancroft, NE.

La Habana

Over Christmas break I traveled with Daughters Jessi and Beth to Cuba for five days. We had a great adventure but I was glad to be back in the greatest state in the greatest country in the world.
Enjoying Lobster Pizza at a Paladare, an unofficial restaurant in a private home.

The view from the balcony of our first Casa Particulares, a private homestay similar to a bed and breakfast

A lot of 1950's cars from Chevy, Dodge, Oldsmobile

The Hotel Hemingway stayed in Old Havana

The view from Puerta Gordo in the city of Cienfuegos. In the background are the mountains we traveled to the next day.

The view from the Casa in Cienfuegos. Notice the horsedrawn carts that taxied people around the city. Not many cars.

Home cooked Cuban breakfast. Eggs, fruit, mango juice, cucumber and cheese sandwich, and dessert.

El Nicho waterfall outside Cienfuegos

Our taxi from Cienfuegos to Havana. $20 per person for the 3 hour drive.

Inside our 4th Casa. This one in Havana. $10 per person. The room next door had 3 young women from America.

Me with John Lennon in Lennon Park, Vedado, Havana.

The government was setting up for the celebration of the Revolution that was held the next day. This is the Plaza de la Revolution.

ACT test prep online

B-R juniors can start their online ACT test prep today.

Highlights of ACT Online Prep

Highlights include:
  • Quality learning content—The library of lessons helps with reviewing content assessed on the ACT in all four subject tests.
  • Personalized learning path—Students can get started with ACT Online Prep by taking a short-form ACT test to get a predicted score range. The system will create a learning path specific to students' needs.
  • Guided plan—Students can stay on track by entering their ACT test date; the learning path will adjust based on that timeframe.
  • Game center—Students can choose from several different games and compete with other students to test their knowledge.
  • Tests—Our full-length practice test (which will give students a predicted ACT score) and practice questions are designed to simulate the actual exam, helping students get used to the content and format of the ACT so there will be no surprises on test day.
  • Instructor dashboards—Instructors can keep track of students’ progress at the aggregate classroom level and the individual student level.
