Florida school reaches compromise on length of cheerleader skirts
From the website http://wtvr.com/2013/08/30/be-of-good-cheer-compromise-settles-florida-school-districts-short-skirt-flap/
A decision was made by administrators at Pinellas County Schools in Florida to prohibit cheerleader skirts during classroom hours because they are too revealing.
Under a compromise reached between the administration and the cheerleading team, the skirts will have to be lower than the cheerleaders’ fingertip reach, and no sleeveless tops will be allowed.
When told of the situation in Florida, B-R cheerleader Kennedy Schuttler stated, "That's why we go to school at B-R."

College Fair tonight at Nielsen Center in West Point 6:30-8:30 pm
Tonight is a college readiness activity that Cuming County school counselors have arranged for our grade 8-12 students.
The following is reprinted from http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2013/05/16/nacac-study-says-counseling-can-affect-students-college-aspirations#ixzz2dISliYKH
"College-going rates could go up significantly if students in high school received counseling as freshmen, and not just when they are juniors and seniors, a new study from the National Association for College Admission Counseling says.
The impact may be greatest on those in groups less likely than others to go to college. Among high school freshmen whose parents did not hold a bachelor’s degree, the study found positive correlations between:
- The time counselors expended on readiness-related activities and the students’ belief that their families could afford to send them to college.
- A family member discussing college with a counselor and a student’s plans to enroll in college.
- A student discussing college with a counselor and a student’s plans to enroll in college and take an admissions exam, such as the SAT or ACT."

CNN will highlight Direct Instruction school
CNN will air a special on August 30th about Education. The special, Soledad O'Brien's Great Expectations: A Black in America Special, will visit Harvest Prep/Seed Academy in Minneapolis where Direct Instruction is utilized.
Direct Instruction is a scientifically-based instructional program used in Bancroft-Rosalie Elementary School. This special will demonstrate how Direct Instruction can provide high academic achievement with students from low income families- generally low achievers. High achievement is what we want from all of our students. When Direct Instruction is used in a system, like ours, that provides for acceleration of higher performing students, the result is students that are further along in their learning than peers in other schools.

State Volleyball Tournament back to Lincoln in 2014
The Nebraska School Activities Association voted to approve Lincoln as the host site for State Volleyball in 2014, 2015, and 2016. They will still be in Grand Island this Fall.
The University of Nebraska has remodeled the Devaney Center to host their volleyball games and will be a great site for the State Championship games. I like giving players the opportunity to play on the same court that the huskers play on. It has been a great experience for our students the two times our football team played in Memorial Field.

NEBRASKA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES OUTSCORE PEERS ON ACT EXAM
Press release from the Nebraska Department of Education
Despite changes in the ACT college entrance exam, Nebraska’s 2013 high school graduates scored higher than their peers nationally and also outscored other graduates in English, reading, mathematics and science scores that measure college readiness.
Nebraska’s average ACT composite score of 21.5 is higher than the national average of 20.9. The highest possible ACT score is 36. For more information, go to www.act.org.
Because of changes, past ACT results should not be compared to the 2013 results, said Steve Kappler, ACT assistant vice president of career and college readiness. Kappler said one major change focused on including this year for the first time the scores of graduates requiring special accommodations. The scores of those graduates were included and reported when ACT considered them allowable through its process.
In Nebraska, 84 percent of the state’s high school graduates took the ACT exam, compared to 78 percent last year. Of the 17, 745 test takers this year, 497 graduates required special accommodations but had reportable scores.
As a result of this change and others, ACT officials said the average ACT composite scores declined in some states but the decline should not be interpreted as a decline in student learning or college readiness. Kappler said ACT also adjusted the benchmarks used to measure college and career readiness and updated its standards by reformatting them.
The 2013 results create a new baseline on which comparison may be made in future years.
In Nebraska there was an additional change this year. For the first time, the ACT results included Nebraska 11th graders attending school districts that are participating in a state ACT pilot project where all 11th graders take the ACT. The three-year project began in 2012, and at that time, 3,807 students were enrolled at the eight participating districts. The following public school districts are participating in the pilot: Hastings, Alliance, Sidney, South Sioux City, Lincoln, Columbus, Gering and Scottsbluff.
Nebraska high school graduates also scored higher than graduates in other states in each subject used to determine college and career readiness:
· 71 percent of Nebraska graduates met the English goal, compared to 64 percent nationally.
· 48 percent of Nebraska test takers met the reading goal, compared to 44 percent nationally.
· 46 percent of Nebraska graduates met the mathematics benchmark, compared to 44 percent nationally.
· 41 percent of Nebraska graduates tested ready in science, compared to 36 percent nationally.
This year the reading benchmark score increased 1 point; the science benchmark dropped 1 point; and, the English and mathematics benchmarks remained the same.
Of the 13 states with 80 percent or more graduates taking the ACT, Nebraska scored at the top with an average 21.5 score. Nationally, 54 percent of the high school graduates were tested with an average score of 20.9.

Head Lice Policy
The Bancroft-Rosalie Community Schools policy on students with head lice is a "no nit" policy. Head lice policies have been in the news since Lincoln Public Schools changed their policy from "no-nit" to a policy that does not exclude students with nits. Nits are head lice eggs - tiny white specks that are stuck to the base of hairs.
Now is a good time to re-examine our school head lice policy and talk about how we want to deal with students who have live lice, students who have been treated for head lice, and students who have nits. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Association of School Nurses all advocate that "no-nit" policies should be discontinued because there is no evidence suggesting no-nit policies prevent or shorten lice outbreaks in schools. After we have a chance to talk about it I will post our head lice policy for the upcoming school year.
