Nebraska film on poverty in education to debut August 5 in Bancroft
-->
“Standing Up to
Poverty,” the film that addresses poverty in Nebraska schools, debuts 7:30 pm Wednesday, August 5 at the Bancroft-Rosalie School Media Center.
Produced by
Nebraska Loves Public Schools (NElovesPS), the 30-minute film identifies some
of the common challenges students living in poverty face and highlights some of
the ways Nebraska schools are addressing the issue. The film reveals the impact
limited basic resources have on students in our public schools it encourages
viewers to do their part to generate awareness and support for public schools.
“Oftentimes, we’re judged on the numbers, the data, the percentages, the graphs,” Cara Riggs, former Omaha Public Schools principal said. “What’s left out of that is the human element … There’s a whole lot going on with them that they bring to us that we have to address in order to get to the academic achievement.”

With nearly two
in five Nebraska children living in low-income households, the issue of poverty
in education is an can be seen in counties across Greater Nebraska.
Immediately
following the film, there will be a panel discussion focused on how the school
and greater community work together to support its students in Bancroft and Rosalie. The panel will include Dr. Jon Cerny, Superintendent of Bancroft-Rosalie School and other B-R staff.
This film and
its accompanying panel discussion are a special edition to the NElovesPS Film
Screening Tour. The event is free and open to the public.
