Senior Job Shadowing

On October 22, B-R seniors spent the day job shadowing. Crawdads appear in B-R Nature Center

Elementary students were surprised to find that 3 crawdads had occupied the sandbox on the elementary playground. Recent rains has caused the metal sandbox to fill with water and Mr. Sjuts placed the crawdads in the sandbox over the weekend for the students to look.

B-R at Humphrey St. Francis 6:00 pm Thursday

The first round play-off game vs. St. Francis will be played at 6:00 pm. There will be a regular school day Thursday and Friday. The team bus will leave at 2:40 pm, players dismissing at 2:30.

Order Football Play-Off shirts by Monday noon

Play-off shirts can be ordered tonight at Parent-Teacher Conferences or by noon Monday at the school office. The design is below but with blue instead of red and on a grey shirt. The cost for short sleeved T-shirts is $10 and Hooded sweatshirts is $25.

School consolidation

The news that Lyons-Decatur, Oakland-Craig and Tekamah-Herman are talking about merging into a Burt County school has been the topic of conversation this week. As populations in rural communities decrease, consolidations occur. Bancroft and Rosalie merged in 1982. We no longer play our old rivals Beemer, Coleridge, and Newcastle. Community members will remember that Pender and Bancroft-Rosalie voted on a merger in 1995, and that failed merger led to the closing of old buildings and the passing of bonds for the construction of new facilities by both districts. I researched school consolidations in Nebraska as part of my University of Nebraska Specialists Degree program in 1992. Low student numbers and school facility needs are reasons that were typically given by recently merged K-12 school districts in a survey I conducted. Merged schools reported that increased courses offerings for students and a wider variety of school sports, clubs, and organizations were benefits of their consolidations. Mergers occur in two ways- 1) one school absorbs the other school and the dominant school colors and mascots are kept, or 2) two schools join and become a new entity with new colors and mascot. The downside is the possible economic impact on communities that lose part or all of their school. Where do students fill up with gas or get pop and snacks on their way to school? Where do people stop to eat and drink after school events? These things impact businesses in the effected communities. Families make decisions about where to live based in part on the education provided by the local schools.One question my research could not answer- Did the loss of their school/high school cause the town to decline, or did the decline of the town lead to the loss of the school/high school? The only thing I could conclude was that small towns need to be grow and attract new families if they want to keep a hometown school. Doing nothing is a bad long-term plan. A quote in a local paper stated that Bancroft-Rosalie could gain some option enrollment students if the Burt County schools merger goes through. Bancroft-Rosalie has excellent school facilities and educational programs and we have room for more students. It would be nice if we had better housing options for young families so they could choose to live here as well as go to school here.

5th-6th grade football team wins league championship

Bancroft-Rosalie defeated Creighton 38-26 in the championship game of the 14 team youth league.

Volleyball this Saturday

B-R Varsity and Junior High volleyball teams are both in tournaments Saturday. The Junior high are at Homer and the Varsity compete in the conference tournament in Pender. Varsity times: 9:15 am in the Event Center Gym the second game will be played at 11:45 am.

 

College going rate

Bancroft-Rosalie School has been a participant in Education Quest grant program since 2008. The goal of the program is to increase the percentage of students that go to college- known as the college going rate.
Some of the things we have used grant funds for include:
1. sponsoring the college fair in West Point with the other Cuming County schools,
2. campus visits for sophomores and juniors, and recently the 8th graders,
3. paying for ACT test registration fees once for each student,
4. incentives for completing the ACT test prep course offered during the school day.

Since 2008 B-R has had one class with a lower than expected college going rate. Even though we stress the advantages of having a two or four year college degree (or other postsecondary training opportunities), sometimes it doesn't work out for some students.

As always, we ask for our parents to support us in our efforts to make sure all of our students know that college is an option they need to strongly consider.

School Board meeting news

The Bancroft-Rosalie Board of Education met Monday, October 14, 2013 at 7:30 pm in Bancroft.

Mr. Sundleaf provided information on the Battle of the Pep Bands that will take place November 8th at Bancroft-Rosalie. Six schools will be participating.
The Speech class gave their presentation “The Panther Pad” which won the Cuming County Bright Lights Award.
During public hearing Tim Ahlers voiced his concerns.
Mr. Hulstein presented information on the social studies curriculum and the teaching of Americanism and citizenship.
In new business, the board reviewed the school transportation program and the school property and workmans compensation insurance.
The board discussed the timeline for teacher negotiations.
Action on the Nebraska Whole Child Project Membership was tabled.
The board decided to give an easement on the new property purchase at the southern and eastern edges of the school lots south of the school.
The board went into executive session to discuss negotiations and personnel.

Dwight Howe of Rosalie, Nebraska was the guest speaker at Sunday at the Museum. His topic was on the Omaha and Ponca tribes. Dwight told the history of the Omaha tribe in Nebraska.

The Senior Center has offered some of the proceeds toward the purchase of the new Panther outfit.
